This is an example of a project which we inherited from other designers. We have taken this role several times; it occurs for various reasons, from other practices folding, or not wanting to carry out technical design, for instance. Picking up a project that someone else has commenced brings its own challenges which we manage as sensitively as possible.
In this instance we reviewed the original proposals, responding to client change requests, technical sense-checks, and a review of regulations to coordinate with the Planning-stage design.
This was a complicated project disrupting much of the house; as you can see from the photos the rear of the house was open to allow significant structural intervention, to make much of the living space open-plan, and open up the rear to views and light. Whilst many more modest projects can be managed with the client living in-situ, in this case it made sense to move out and give the contractor wider access to the whole of the site. The scope included remodelling and/or remedial works to every room in the house.
