Force Cancer Charity Shop
Services provided: feasibility study. options appraisal and full architectural services
Completed October 2015
Force run a well-known and award-winning charity shop on Heavitree Fore Street, which is a main source of income for the charity. They are well supported in the local community; the shop is loved for its meandering, warren-like spaces where a good rummage can turn up treasure.
Nevertheless, the building was somewhat neglected and problems included leaking roofs, asbestos presence and faulty electrics. Some of the spaces were unfit for use and welfare facilities were poor. We undertook an extensive options appraisal to review how the charity’s budget would be most effectively and efficiently used, and which resulted in the design and specification of an extensive refurbishment programme.
The works had to be planned to reduce the loss of income from shop closures, so were undertaken in phases to allow a shop-front to remain open for as long as possible, even in a reduced form. They also had to be completed at an optimum point in the calendar allowing in particular for the peak trading period leading up to Christmas.
