Are you aware that nearly 12,000 new homes are built by self-builders every year? This accounts for up to 10% of the country’s new house production, according to Sarah Chilcott on the Planning Portal. This is significantly less than other European countries such as Austria, where self-builders are responsible for 80% of new homes. This clarifies why, perhaps, there is such dissatisfaction with the industry in this country, but also begs the question, why don’t we build more. Evidently, there are significant barriers not least of which is the procurement of suitable land.
