Heritage Assets

30th June 2018

The end of June saw us submit an application for Listed Building Consent to convert parts of the Lloyds Bank in central Ashburton into two dwellings. The ‘shop-front’ remains the same but an existing side passage gives access to entrances to a small ground floor flat and larger first floor family home. The design has to take into account the Listed building’s features, not only some lovely internal rooms with feature ceilings but the front elevation in it’s prominent location [...]

Project starts

30th April 2018

We have returned from Malawi in time for two more projects to commence on site here, closer to home. Firstly, a sunny garden room extension complete with triple-glazed roof lantern on a Listed Building in Topsham, careful insertions and incisions to give more generous living accommodation and to bring light deep into the internal spaces. This was originally commissioned by the owner/occupier of the house who subsequently sold; however the project was picked up by the new owner and taken [...]

Success in Chimbiya

10th April 2018

We have just returned from our trip to Malawi with St Peters Malawi Education Trust; we’ve had an eye-opening time. The building team spent 5 hard, hot days in the sun and successfully completed the construction of seven classrooms ahead of time. The frames went up well and were completed with roofs in the nick of time, as the heavens opened the moment we officially handed over the project. All 900 pupils, families and building team were [...]

Project completion

28th February 2018

This month saw the completion of a bright and spacious extension in Pennsylvania, Exeter, creating an open-plan kitchen/dining room in this lovely family home. The kitchen replaced a conservatory in a little courtyard space at the back of the house, and was back-to-back with a similar project we completed next door a few years before. Here, alternative thinking to move the kitchen from its original space meant that some significant structural modifications, and therefore cost, were avoided, and the disruption [...]

Complete in time for Christmas

20th December 2017

This month, the completion of one of our smallest projects. A very modest kitchen extension that replaced an outside loo, and allowed the kitchen to finally have a view over the garden, where previously this was only possible with the aid of a stepladder and a squint view. Careful consideration of the window arrangement and a slightly unusual floor plan meant that the whole garden is brought into the eye-line, making for a much improved relationship for this plant-loving client; [...]

End of Year 2016-17

30th November 2017

We’ve had another busy year full of exciting projects including building on previous ‘firsts’ for the office. Following on from the completion last year of a new loo for Clyst Honiton Church, we are currently building one in Honiton Baptist Church, have design similar for Pinhoe Church Office, and are discussing initial briefs for re-ordering Rockbeare Church to include flexible community spaces, a kitchen and… another loo.  It seems we are getting a reputation for Church washrooms! Most recently, home [...]

Smooth handover

18th October 2017

Today, Practical Completion at a site in Sidmouth where we have extended a chalet-bungalow to front and back; remodelled kitchen, dining and utility areas completely; and opened-up the first floor to create an open-plan bedroom/dressing room/en-suite… not to mention completely insulating the whole building, re-wiring, re-plumbing, and lots of hard landscaping too. A large project, this has brought a dated and dilapidated bungalow bang up to date and promises to be a beautiful home for our clients to retire into. [...]

Site progress

7th October 2017

This month we see the imminent completion of a large extension and refurbishment project in Sidmouth. Extensions to the front and rear plus a complete new thermal envelope wrap up the building nice and cosy for the winter; new efficient heating systems and complete new wiring and controls means it will be cost-effective to run. The original chalet-bungalow has been completely re-organised on both floors and now looks smart as a pin. Looking forward to handover mid-October.

Other projects have recently [...]

New hat and coat

19th August 2017

Work finished this month on the Hall Church in Pinhoe and it now has a long-overdue new roof which will no longer require ad-hoc slate repairs and strategically-placed buckets. The new roof was installed by Tim Stribley and he has done a very neat job; along with replacing the soffits and fascias and completely redecorating, the Hall Church is looking smart and bright. We were able to keep the original ridge tiles and roof finials for a touch of character.

The [...]

Site news

28th July 2017

We have several projects on site and about to start on site, at the moment. The refurbishment of the Hall Church, Pinhoe, with new roof, ceilings, lights and decoration throughout, plus some other minor repairs, has brought a fresh new look whilst being able to retain some original characterful features, including clay roof finials. This will see it ready for many more years of use at the centre of Pinhoe’s community.

In St Thomas, an extension to the ground floor of [...]
